How much does a new bathroom really cost?

Research, plan and prepare

The cost of your new bathroom depends upon lots of factors and the sky's the limit if you have a budget big enough. Try and imagine what it is you want most, for example, is it to adapt an existing room for easy access including disability or inclusive products, complete bathroom re-design of space and a designer bathroom, a basic suite upgrade with redecoration or just a DIY bathroom renovation to cut back on costs?

Do research beforehand and treat it like a project, make notes, put together an ideas board, use anything at your disposal to help you formulate your dream design. An excellent tool to help you is creative social media, sites such as Pinterest or a google image search can assist you in creating your ideal bathroom space. This is an excellent way to discover current bathroom trends and ideas, or at the very least, it may inspire you to create something truly unique. A virtual story board will save on pritt stick too .

A massive chunk of your budget will go on using professional trades to make your new bathroom a reality. For instance, do you need an architect, designer, builder, decorator, plumber, cabinet maker, joiner, electrician, tiler, glazer or flooring fitter?

Shop around as prices can also be a postcode lottery. The same products and professional services are often more or less expensive depending upon where you live. Try and get the best bathroom deal you possibly can for your budget. Ask for advice, get multiple quotes if you have the time and choose reputable companies with a positive history and portfolio of work.

When choosing a company or professional tradesperson make sure you agree on a realistic achievable time frame and stick to your budget. By doing the initial research and planning ahead you can avoid potential expensive pitfalls such as having to buy replacement or additional materials and services. For instance, think about additional extras you would like before agreeing to have work carried out such as:

  • Do you require additional features such as soft close seats, soft close hinges, silent sliding doors, easy clean safety glass, cool touch showers, grab rails, bath seats or non-slip shower trays.
  • Do you require any bathroom furniture? Extractor fans, bath panel storage, bathroom heating including towel rails?
  • Do you merely wish to re-paint the existing ceiling or do you apply a more lavish acrylic ceiling?
  • Do you fit a central light fitting or more contemporary spotlights or even LED light strips?
  • Do you fit tiles or do you fit the fantastic grout-less wet wall panels?
  • What type of flooring do you fit?
  • Do you fit mood lighting?
  • Do you fit a fancy backlit mirror – does it have a shaver point or toothbrush charging point?
  • Do you fit blue tooth capability so you can listen to your music?
  • Do you fit a waterproof TV?

As you can see, the cost of a new bathroom really does depend on lots of factors and there will be lots more besides.
